چکیده

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of water temperature during fertilization and egg incubation in the determination of the sex ratio of fingerlings of silver catfish Rhamdia quelen. Water temperatures of 19, 25 and 30°C were used during the egg fertilizations, and the eggs were then incubated at temperatures of 19, 25 or 30°C for each fertilization temperature condition. An increase in temperature reduced the fertilization rate of R. quelen, while the final number of fish was reduced when a lower temperature was used during egg incubation. The temperatures of fertilization and incubation that were tested did not alter the sex ratio.

Activity patterns of South American silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen).

The South American silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) is a widely distributed species in Central and South America in areas east of the Andes between Venezuela and the northern parts of Argentina. The bottom dwelling species occurs in lakes and reservoirs as well as in rivers. Between June 2000 and December 2001, sixteen silver catfish were tracked during fourteen 24-h cycles in two-hour-intervals...

Anesthetic activity of Brazilian native plants in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen)

There is an increasing demand for inexpensive and safe anesthetics that can reduce fish stress caused by some procedures such as capture and handling. In this context, the present study evaluated the potential of essential oils (EO) of three Brazilian native plants (Hesperozygis ringens, Lippia sidoides and Ocotea acutifolia) as anesthetics for the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen. Moreover, an an...

Agrichemicals have been extensively used on crop field to control unwanted invasive weed species. The impact of agrichemicals on aquatic vertebrate species has been a matter of increasing concern to researchers and environmentalist. The present study aimed to evaluate the acute effects of sublethal concentrations (10% of the LC50-96h) of an atrazine based herbicide on several immune system para...

Effect of water temperature and salinity in oviposition, hatching success and infestation of Aphanoblastella mastigatus (Monogenea, Dactylogyridae) on Rhamdia quelen.

Several environmental parameters may influence biological processes of several aquatic invertebrates, such as the Monogenea. Current analysis investigates oviposition, hatching success and infestation of Aphanoblastella mastigatus, a parasite of the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen at different temperatures (~ 24 and 28 °C) and salinity (by adding sodium chloride to water, at concentrations 0, 5 a...

Monoterpenoids (thymol, carvacrol and S-(+)-linalool) with anesthetic activity in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen): evaluation of acetylcholinesterase and GABAergic activity

This study evaluated the anesthetic potential of thymol and carvacrol, and their influence on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the muscle and brain of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). The AChE activity of S-(+)-linalool was also evaluated. We subsequently assessed the effects of thymol and S-(+)-linalool on the GABAergic system. Fish were exposed to thymol and carvacrol (25, 50, 75, and ...
